Great news came in from Germany last week, as the popular Oktoberfest 7s will return next year, following an unexpected break in 2018.
The international tournament, held at the famous Olympic Stadium in Munich, was successfully launched last year attracting 10000s of spectators and some of the world’s best teams such as South Africa, Fiji and eventual winners Australia.
In 2017, the Oktoberfest 7s, was the biggest tournament of its kind in a country which has recently experienced a significant increase in popularity among the rugby community in both codes.
The German XVs team only just missed out on the World Cup 2019 qualification last month while the 7s team came very close to secure a regular spot in the World Rugby Sevens Series after losing to Japan in the final of the Hong Kong Sevens earlier this year.
The Oktoberfest 7s 2019 takes place on the 21st and 22nd of September in Munich just three miles away from the world’s most famous Beerfest. Amateur teams can also look forward to a separate tournament which will be held parallel to the main event in Munich.
