The sixth Hartpury Sevens tournament has seen another spectacular day of rugby sevens at the stunning facilities of the Hartpury Sports Academy. 16 men’s and 5 women’s team entertained a large crowd at the one-day tournament, held in partnership between Hartpury College and 7 Bamboos Rugby.

In the men’s tournament, the Gogerrdan Raiders, one of four Welsh sides, won the Cup competition after they beat last year’s winners Barracuda Hunters in the final. It was the second visit for the Raiders, after their debut in 2018, when the Hunters were crowned champions.

On their way to the Cup title, the Raiders beat the Navy Sharks in the quarterfinals before going head to head with another Welsh team Prostate Cymru Allstars in the semis.

In a replay of last year’s Cup final, the Barracuda Hunters, a team consisting of many Hartpury-based players, the Hunters beat the Cats 24-14 in the quarters and the charity team Odd Balls 7s 28-21 in a close and very tight semi-final.

Both finalists will gain valuable points in the Secure Trading Sevens Series, which counts towards the all-important national final later this year in Northampton.

In a strong fielded women’s competition, hosts Gloucester-Hartpury managed to defend their cup title once again after an intense day of five matches. In a round-robin style competition, the Tyrell’s Premiership team beat Bath Rugby, 7 Bamboos Rugby, the Cats as well as Hartpury College to secure the Cup once more.

In the plate final, Bath Rugby beat Hartpury College with a sudden death try in extra time.

At the men’s competition, regular visitors The Godfathers overcame the Royal Navy Sharks to claim the Plate trophy while the South-Wales Wildcats beat Cheltenham-based Connolly 7s in the Shield final.

We like to thank all teams, officials and supporters for attending the Hartpury Sevens 2019 tournament and are excited to welcome you again in 2020.
