7 Bamboos Rugby played their very first tournament in Germany last weekend with a selection of German and British players and in partnership with the Bataillon d’ Amour a women’s and men’s side competed under the name Bataillon d’ Bamboos.
The AMS Sevens in the south of Germany is the country’s biggest 7s tournament hosting over 32 teams from 4 different nations. The event is located in Neckarsulm about an hour away from Stuttgart.
The men’s started into the competition on Saturday morning with a very close encounter just managing to beat Heidelberger TV 15:12.
However, our women’s side had a much stronger start to the campaign as they overcame RFC Dortmund 43:0 in their first match.
In their second match of the day, the men’s seemed to be a lot more awake as they beat hosts Neckarsulm 31:7, a strong team which plays top-flight rugby.
Meanwhile, the ladies continued a try-scoring festival by beating Stu Sta Munich 45:0 to book the tickets for the Cup quarters early on. In their final matches of the day, the men’s showed another solid performance against Rugby Darmstadt with a 38:14 win and the women once more dominated their opponent by a convincing 55:0 victory TGS Darmstadt.
With three out of three wins for both teams on day one, the Bamboos had an excellent starting position to compete for the Cup on day two.
This time the women’s team was first-up playing Stuttgarter RC. Once again, the girls didn’t just perform brilliantly in the attack but also constantly put in the hard work in the defense against a physical opponent. In their fourth match, they maintained the clean sheet and qualified for the semi-finals with a 59:0 win.
The men’s also managed to get through their quarters without conceding a single try and scoring 35 points against DRC Hannover. In their semi-final, the playing conditions got a lot worse and heavy rain turned the men’s semi-final into a tough challenge.
The boys played the German Premiership team RK Heusenstamm, which is traditionally focussing heavily on 7s rugby, so it was obvious that this match would be a challenging contest. Although the Bataillon d’ Bamboos scored first, Heusenstamm kept coming back and scored a last minute try which sealed a win for them and consequently the end of the tournament for our men’s team.
Meanwhile, the women’s continued their strong form with yet another clear win against Karlsruher Rugby Club to progress to the final where they faced a selection of Germany’s best female rugby players named Schriesheims Finest.
It was by far the toughest test for our brave girls who gave it all in a physical and top-class final. For the first time, the Bamboos conceded two tries and it took a magnificent last push to secure the 17:14 win.
Next up, the Bamboos Women’s are back in action at the Secure Trading 24/Sevens Series in Bath this Saturday. Free tickets can be booked here.
A huge thanks go to Jakob from Bataillon d’ Amour and Dominik from the AMS Sevens for all his support.
