In recent weeks, the numbers of Covid-linked infections, hospitalization and deaths have dropped significantly across the UK. Thanks to a remarkably successful vaccination programme and another tough lockdown the great “re-opening” is well under way and a path back to normality is in sight.
However, despite the successes in fighting the pandemic, there is still a relatively high risk for players and other participants to get infected at a sport event, especially with a close contact sport like rugby.
Considering that the majority of the participating players fall in the age group 20-25 years old, and therefore are among the last ones to be vaccinated, it is unclear at which point this age group will be fully protected against the virus.
With all these positives developments in mind balanced against the remaining risks we carefully had to balance out whether it’s time to resume our annual events and team activities this summer.
And it’s with the greatest regrets that we made the decision to put this season on hold and not run events or team activities in 2021. After a tough year in 2020, without any rugby-related activities, it was particularly painful to make this decision.
However, as an event organiser, we are eventually responsible for all risk hazards at our events. This responsibility requires extensive insurance cover in place which would ultimately also protects us from a covid-outbreak at one of our events. And as a small organisation, it is impossible to afford such specific cover and to take the risks of having covid-related infections, caused by our events.
As mentioned, this was by no means an easy decision, but we hope that you understand our point of view. We are now fully focused to bounce back stronger than ever in 2022 with all events and team activities back on track.
It goes without saying that if you and your team purchased a ticket for one of our events last year, all tickets remain valid for next year.
If you aiming to play 7s this summer for a different team we recommend to join our 7s Exchange Facebook page, where teams and players can connect with each other.
Please stay safe and see you next summer.
