The countdown is on!

While I am writing this text I glimpse on a little digital countdown clock which I set up recently. It reads:
The countdown reminds me on the remaining time until the first kick-off of the Hartpury 7’s 2014, our first-ever hosting tournament. The event will be another great milestone in what we call “the journey”. The journey towards this tournament was never an easy one.
If you ever organised a big event you’ll exactly know how it feels, to deal with many different people at the same time, to please guests and suppliers, to raise funds and to meet deadlines. But probably the greatest challenge of all is to keep the bigger picture in mind while concentrating on each individual element at the same time. You can’t really allow yourself to take your mind off the event.
But what amazes me most is the way you learn to cope with setbacks. Obviously, there are always individuals who let you down last minute or teams that simply cannot commit as much as you would like to. And that is fine. Organising a big event means learning to live with that. It is all about the things that you can control.
Eventually it is like being on a rugby pitch. You might get annoyed with the referee, the weather, the changing rooms or the away fans. But can you really change anything about it once the game is on? – Probably not. But what you can manage is your attitude towards these external factors. If you face them with a certain expectation and accept the fact that things won’t always go your way you learn to focus on things that you can influence: tactics, the ways you communicate and reflect and how you think and act under pressure. And the suddenly and sometimes surprisingly the external factors become your friend.
For now I just hope that by the 31st of May, people who will be involved at the Hartpury 7’s will feel truly welcome and experience a fantastic day of 7’s rugby. Let’s ensure that we make many new friends in exactly 11 Days 18 Hours 02 Minutes 12 Seconds.
I also like to use this opportunity to kindly thank Hartpury College for all their support throughout the organisation.
