Despite an early try for New Zealand by Kayla McAllister, the Kiwis didn’t find a way to stop the fast-paced playing Aussies. Just a few moments after the opening try, Australia’s winger Emma Tonegato equalised the score.

A defining moment came when New Zealand’s star player Portia Woodman was sin-binned for a deliberate knock-on and Australia punished the additional space in defence with a try from Evania Pelite. Two more tries early on in the second half by Green and Caslick just sealed the deal for Australia. By this point a 24-5 lead was just enough to win the prestigious gold medal. New Zealand’s top scorers McAllister and Woodman added two more tries towards the end of the match but it was too little to late.

Australia and New Zealand were joined on the podium by Canada, who beat Great Britain 33-10 in the Bronze decider.

In the other play-off matches on the final day, the USA beat France for fifth place, Spain overcame Fiji for seventh, with hosts Brazil beating Japan to ninth and Kenya finishing with a win over Colombia.

Brazil's 33-5 victory over Japan secured a core team place on the HSBC World Rugby Women's Sevens Series for 2016-17.

Today the men's competition kicks-off, with Australia facing France at 15:00 BST. Team GB begin their bid for a medal against Kenya at 16:00.

HSBC World Rugby Women's Sevens Series champions Australia beat Spain 24-0 to set up a semi-final against Canada, who beat France 15-5 earlier. Australia’s Charlotte Caslick scored twice to join team-mate Emma Tonegato on six tries so far. Ellia Green also added a try completing the 24-0 victory.

Canada’s win over France was only decided in the final two minutes with tries from Bianca Farella and Ghislaine Landry.

Great Britain and New Zealand, who booked the remaining semi-final spots enjoyed victories over Fiji (26-7) and the USA (5-0) respectively. Fiji's hopes of winning their country's first ever Olympic medal were ended by Team GB, who showed another top performance with two tries by Abbie Brown as well as one each from Alice Richardson and Joanne Watmore.

New Zealand and Great Britain both topped their pool with an unbeaten run while top seeds Australia only drew (12-12) against USA in Pool A. New Zealand’s quarter-final was decided by a single try from Portia Woodman, who ended day two tied with Australian duo Tonegato and Caslick as the leading try scorers at Rio 2016.

In Pool A World Sevens Series Champs Australia were the outstanding team with a 53-0 win over Colombia and a comfortable 36-0 victory against Fiji. However, Fiji are still in the mix for a quarter-final spot following a 12-7 win against USA. The Americans showed a much improved performance in their second match against Colombia as Kathryn Johnson and Alev Kelter were the outstanding performers in the 48-0 win.

In Pool B New Zealand underlined their ambitions to win gold by two impressive wins over Kenya (52-0) and Spain (31-5). Portia Woodman and Kayla McAlister, both selected in the Rio Dream Team, were among the star-players for New Zealand. France who opened the tournament with a 24-7 win over Spain looked also very strong on Day 1.

A clear 41-7 victory against Kenya sets up a pool decider with New Zealand on Day 2. Another group decider awaits today in Pool C as Canada and Great Britain both went unbeaten through the first day. The Canadians made it through the day without conceding any points. A 45-0 win over Japan and a 38-0 against Brazil secured the pole position in Group C for the Canadian ladies. Great Britain had a nervous start in their first match against the hosts. Brazil enjoyed a lot of possession especially in the first half. However in the second half, Team GB found their way into the game scoring a total five tries and a 29-3 win.

Today the action continues with the last round of pool matches starting at 11:00am local time (3pm UK time) and the first round of knock-out games.

#Rio2016 | Olympic Rugby Sevens Guide

stadiumThe Deodoro Stadium in Rio - Home of the Olympic Rugby Sevens tournament. Photo: Portal Brasil 2016

The waiting is over. After 92 years rugby returns to the Olympics – and it is all set to become a massive success. Whereas between 1900 and 1924 the 15-player version of the sport appeared, Rio 2016 marks the debut of 7s, a faster, shorter adaption of the game. Bravery, skill and speed will be in abundance in the men’s and women’s tournaments.

Both events are structured the same. There are three pools of four teams each. The top two from each group plus the two best third-place teams advance to the quarterfinals. With 68 fast-paced matches played every half-hour over six days, 7s could be the viral sensation of the Games.

The women’s tournament is up first kicking-off on the 6th of August over three days. On Tuesday the 9th of August Australia and France open the men’s tournament at the Deodoro Stadium north-west of the Brazilian mega-city. The stadium hosts 15,000 spectators and stages beside rugby the modern pentathlon competition as well.

Anything is possible in 7s which is one reason for the sports recent success. So, in a game which is known for great surprises, the battle for the medals is set to be breath-taking. The bookies see World 7s Series back-to-back champions Fiji (9/4) and two-times 15s World Cup Winners South Africa (9/4) in front within the men’s competition followed by New Zealand (5/2), Australia (10/1) and Great Britain (10/1). In the women’s tournament Australia (8/11) are currently the team to beat followed by New Zealand (7/4) and Great Britain (9/1).

With 12 teams in the mix for each event and an opportunity to create rugby history, Rio 2016 will be the ultimate stage for 7s. Find out more about who is playing, all the pools, schedules and the stars of the game with our Rio 2016 guide below.

One to watch | Osea Kolinisau

Fiji’s captain is one of the most exciting players to watch. Extremely fast, unbelievable skilful and tough in defence. With a height of 5ft7in, Kolinisau isn’t the tallest player comparing to his physical team mates, however this doesn’t stop the 30-year old from being among the best. During the past World Series he scored 1026 points; expect him to score a few more this summer in Rio.

During the last two weekends the women’s and men’s Spanish rugby 7s teams experienced their greatest success in history as both sides successfully qualified for the Olympics this summer.

A week ago on Sunday, the men’s team beat top-favourites Samoa in most dramatic fashion, when Ignacio Martin scored a last-play try against the islanders to secure the 22-19 win at the final in Monaco.

Last Sunday the Spanish women’s team booked the very last ticket for Rio by beating Russia 12-19 in their respective repechage final at the UCD Bowl in Dublin. Patricia Garcia was Spain’s top-scorer, scoring two tries and three conversions in the final.

The rugby sevens tournament at Rio 2016 will be staged between 6th and 11th of August at the Deodoro Stadium.
