Cape Town becomes latest host

Today World Rugby confirmed that the South Africa Sevens will be relocated from Port Elizabeth to the impressive Cape Town stadium. Cape Town joins Vancouver and Sydney within a new line-up of destinations, reflecting the significant appeal and attraction of rugby sevens to cities and nations worldwide.

The new venue underlines the high ambitions of World Rugby regarding the sport of 7s. World Rugby Chairman Bernard Lapasset comments: "With excitement increasing ahead of Rio 2016, the World Rugby Sevens Series is going from strength to strength, proving a hit with fans, broadcasters and sponsors around the globe with its winning blend of compelling and competitive action, global destinations and festival atmosphere."

Kingsholm will host the first stage of the Singha Premiership Rugby 7s Series

Premiership Rugby officially announced the structure of this year’s Premiership Rugby 7s series.  The competition now sponsored by Singha Beer will kick off at Gloucester Rugby on Thursday 20 August with the Final eight days later at the Twickenham Stoop.

The only 7s competition involving all 12 Aviva Premiership Rugby clubs will also be staged at the Ricoh Arena and Kingston Park and will be shown live on BT Sport

Rugby Director at Premiership Rugby, Phil Winstanley said that "since the series started in 2010, it has become a significant date in the rugby calendar".

"A year before rugby returns to the Olympics is crucial that Premiership Rugby continues to lead the way when it comes to club 7s. This will be an important competition and will start a run-in to the Olympic Games when rugby will be firmly in the world spotlight."

Ollie Morgan, in charge of the Gloucester Rugby 7s team is also looking forward to the event in the summer: "We were delighted to lift the Premiership Rugby 7s trophy last summer, kicking the season off with the first silverware, and we are looking forward to defending our title this summer".

The former Gloucester player sees great development opportunities in the smaller version of rugby, especially with regards to the younger players.

Vancouver secured the bid to become the latest venue for the ever-growing World Sevens series.

World Rugby announced that the Vancouver tournament will expand the series to 10 tournaments, though the world governing body is expected to announce a rejigging of the venues next month after they asked last year for expressions of interest to host a tournament.

Vancouver won the bid ahead of 25 other competing locations. The tournament will be held at the impressive indoors BC Place arena. "Vancouver's inclusion is exciting for World Rugby and will boost the sport's ability to inspire fans in established and developing rugby markets, and contribute to the continued growth of the game," World Rugby chairman Bernard Lapasset said in a statement.
