The magic combination of sunshine, great teams and many spectators are often the recipe for a fabulous 7s tournament. At the third edition of the Hartpury Sevens 2016 the organisers Hartpury College and 7 Bamboos Rugby were once again blessed to get all of these ingredients in one day.
Despite a slightly re-structured woman’s competition, caused through some last-minute drop-outs, the eight attending teams entertained the spectators with fast and high-quality rugby across both pools. Some of the best teams from and beyond the region travelled down to Gloucestershire in order to compete for the three trophies.
Gloucester-Hartpury, Tigers 7s, U.W.A., University of Gloucestershire
Hartpury College, Lichfield Ladies, Dragons 7s, West Country Cavs
After a thrilling pool stage, Tigers 7s lost the Shield final against Lichfield, co-hosts Gloucester-Hartpury won the Plate final against West Country Cavs and Welsh side Dragons 7s beat the University of Gloucestershire in the Cup final.
At the 16-teams men’s competition the quality was equally high. A brilliant mix of 7s-specialists, local clubs and charity teams came together to compete in the first-ever RFU Community Sevens Series. Hartpury Sevens recently gained the rights to host a regional qualifier for this brand-new national 7s-competition format.
After a three round pool stage and nail-biting knock-out rugby the WAFI Warriors overcame Star 7s in the Shield final, the Royal Navy Sharks beat the Toucans in the Plate final and Cheltenham based St. Paul’s Pirates beat last-years Champions Bandits 7s in the Cup final.
With the win of the Cup final the St. Paul’s Pirates progressed to the next round of the RFU Community Sevens Series in Exeter.
Hartpury Sevens is an official qualifier for the RFU Community Sevens Series 2016
