Competitions: Cup & Plate
At the second edition of the Three Counties Show 7s eight year 9 teams travelled to Malvern to play 7s in front of a large show crowd. It was the first of the three-day show which attracts around 90k spectators over the weekend being one of the biggest shows of its kind in Europe.
Despite forecasts of thunder and rain, the weather held up sunny spells made the tournament even more enjoyable for all participants. The eight teams were split into two pools of four teams each. After 12 rounds of pool stage rugby, the top-four teams Cotswold School, Dene Magna, St. Albans and Chosen Hill played for the Cup trophy while Tewkesbury, Millbrook, Prince Henry’s and Archway qualified for the Plate.
During the four semi-finals the schools underlined their great ambition for the game and showcased outstanding 7s skills. Eventually it was Tewkesbury and Prince Henry who booked the tickets for the Plate final. Last year’s Cup winners Tewkesbury managed to get away with some silverware by beating Prince Henry’s School.
Meanwhile the Cup final was probably the outstanding match of the day. A game of highest quality and true entertainment was just decided in the last few moments of the match. At the end it was Chosen Hill who left the pitch as they won the title. For the Cheltenham-based school it was the second 7s title this season after the win at the Churchdown 7s earlier this year.
