The first weekend in June is traditionally one of the busiest in the Bamboos-calendar with both squads in action on Saturday as well as the tournament crew working hard to deliver the only junior club 7s tournament in the area a day later.
As the number of senior 7s tournaments across the country keeps constantly increasing, opportunities for youngsters to play the latest Olympic sport remain rare. Therefore we are delighted to launch another exciting junior event this summer, aiming to further expand the focus on development rugby.
Build on recent successful collaborations with the annual SW7s festival, we teamed up again in order to introduce the first-ever SW7s Development Cup this June at Cleve RFC. In previous years we introduced a school tournament as well as development training days with top-class 7s specialists.
This year 16 junior teams have entered the competition in order to go head-to-head for silverware. A great mix of local sides from Bristol and Gloucestershire as well as teams from further beyond have signed up for the event.
As the tournament will be part of the three-day long SW7s Festival, which will be staged for the third time this year, a large crowd to cheers the youngsters on will be guaranteed. Additionally, the teams can look forward to experience top-class facilities, high-standard referees and attractive prizes.

As the Bamboos senior teams start their preparation for another busy season next month, 7 Bamboos Rugby set up another exciting opportunity for junior players to get involved this summer.
In partnership with Old Bristolians RFC and the GRFU, 20 u16s and u17s players will get the opportunity to come together and join the Juniors Day on 25th June, a day of 7s training and matches supported by professional coaches and Bamboos senior players.
The day aims to introduce new players to the game and support experienced players in further developing their skills. Together with our coaches, we designed an entertaining programme which will guarantee a fun as well as instructive day. Following two blocks of training, the afternoon will be all about playing 7s in a competitive format to give each player the chance to shine.
All participants can look forward to a free lunch as well as training kit. As this free-to-enter event is limited to 20 spaces, we strongly recommend registering as soon as possible.

With much excitement, our Satellite team from Chosen Hill School travelled to Bristol last Thursday in order to play the first 7s tournament of the season.
After a strong start to the tournament resulting in a win over the hosts QEH, the u18s team faced Pate’s Grammar School from Cheltenham. Pate’s started the game well with a few quick tries, which made it difficult to find a way back into the match. Despite a much improved second half and a brave defence Chosen Hill lost the match. Facing the strong Wycliffe College in the final pool match didn’t make things easier, as Wycliffe found again the better start in the game and maintained the lead throughout the match.
However, despite the two losses in a row the team showed no signs of resignation and bounced back with two great performances during the knock-out stage. First up, Chosen faced KLB from Bristol in the semi-final. Probably the best performance of the day, the boys entered the game full of energy, with smart decisions in attack and defence leading to start-finish win.
In the plate final the boys went head-to-head with North Bristol, who just beat QEH in extra time of the second semi-final. Like in the previous encounter, Chosen went into the match with a smart game plan which resulted in a comfortable three-try lead at half-time. Despite strong efforts by North Bristol in the second half, the boys from Chosen Hill finished the game off in style and got away with a well-deserved Plate trophy.

The hugely successful ‘SW7s Development Sessions’ for under 15s/16s with England 7s star Dan Norton and former England 7s coach Russell Earnshaw, advanced into becoming the South West 7s Development Cup.
The first-ever development dedicated 7s tournament focuses on club sides in the U15s and U16s age groups. SW7s alongside 7 Bamboos Rugby are offering a unique platform for club development players to experience 7s at a top level, hosted by some of the UK’s leading development coaches and to be refereed by officials of the Dubai 7s.
These development players are the future of the game and they deserve as much experience as possible. As the sport grows from strength to strength in the UK and across the world, 7s has a massive future and we are making Bristol's mark in that future!
The standard of the competition was incredibly high throughout the day which indicates how the game has progressed on the junior level. The 16 teams showcased entertaining 7s, resulting in some thrilling pool and knock-out encounters. At the end of a long day, Corsham won the u14s Plate final while Chippenham's u14s beat Lydney to win the Cup. In the u15s age group UR7s overcame Stroud to secure the Plate trophy and Bristol-based Clifton Rugby won against Matson to become the Cup champions.

Two years ago, we teamed up with the SW7s Festival in order to launch the ‘SW7s Development Sessions’ for junior players coached by England 7s star Dan Norton as well as former England 7s coach Russell Earnshaw and the Bamboos coaching team. These training sessions have progressed into the SW7s Development Cup, a 7s tournament specifically for the age groups u14s and u15s.
Following last year's successful launch of the event, the Development Cup returned in 2018 with a new and exciting format. For the first time, the competition was played under the new X Rugby 7s laws which the RFU introduced recently.

One of the busiest weekends for the Bamboos will be at the beginning of June when the team rolls out in full force at the SW7s Festival. Since the launch of the event in 2015, we have been involved and could witness how the festival has grown significantly from year to year.
In 2017, the three-day festival will take place at the stunning facilities of Cleve RFC from the 2nd to the 4th of June. The Bamboos will compete with their elite men’s team and the newly introduced women’s team on Saturday.

This tournament was sold out fast, underlining the great interest in 7s among age group teams.

With the aim to further support the development of girls and women’s rugby we are proud to bring you this opportunity. There are 20 free spaces for under 15s girls (no 7s experience required) to join professionally coached 7s-sessions, followed by an exhibition match in front of a large audience.

Girls and women's rugby is on a massive rise at the moment and the game keeps growing and growing. On the 3rd of June, we celebrated this fantastic progress with a dedicated development day exclusively for u15s girls.
Young females had the unique opportunity to experience the awesome sport of Rugby 7s led by professional coaches! Our very own Bamboos coaches will join forces with the incredible Bristol Ladies Rugby. The sessions took place on Sunday 3rd June and were part of the second SW7s Development Cup, an X Rugby 7s tournament for the age groups u14s and u15s.
It’s this time of the year, the calm before the storm. It’s February and anything 7s related seems still ages away. But as the cold and dark days slowly disappear, the desire for long hot summer days is growing immensely. So the planning is in full swing and there is so much coming up for all age groups. To keep on track, here is a quick overview:
Since a few weeks, our school programme is underway. The 7 Bamboos Satellite Club, supported by Active Gloucestershire and in partnership with Chosen Hill School, offers weekly training sessions for all year 9-11 students. Everyone is welcome and the first five sessions are free. Participants can expect professional coaching, stash and regular tournament attendances.
Especially for the youngsters, it is important to play as much 7s "under full conditions" as possible. Therefore we worked hard to establish a constant transition from the training to the match field. A number of School 7s tournaments are pencilled in for this spring. At the end of March we are running our very own competition at Chosen Hill School then the team is off to Prince Henry’s School followed by a big tournament in Bristol.
In April we will launch the new 7s season for all senior players with our free and open training sessions at Hartpury College. Come along each Wednesday evening and join the team. Entering the fourth season, we have an exciting tour plan in place.
For the second time this year, there is a big Open Day planned for all 17-21 years old players. This is for everyone who wants to get involved this season or just want to try out some 7s without any commitment. A great opportunity to get to know the sport as well as the Bamboos.
Beside the juniors and the men’s teams, we will – for the first time – run a Bamboos women’s side this year. In partnership with an established club, the training starts in April with tournaments planned for May, June and July.
The popular SW7s Development Cup returns this June as part of the annual SW7s Festival.
This u14s/u15s tournament offers one a few opportunities for those age groups to enjoy the Olympic sport in front of a large crowd and the best possible playing conditions. This year the competition will be run for the first time under the newly introduced X Rugby 7s rules.
X Rugby 7s is a brand-new format which allows youngsters to enjoy 7s rugby during the Summer months and is ideal for inexperienced players to start the game. The essential law changes of X Rugby 7s include a smaller pitch, two try-zones as well as modified kicking and tackling rules.
The tournament will take place on Sunday 3rd of June at Cleve RFC and there are only eight spaces per age groups. Entering a team is only £25.00 / team.

In a continuing partnership with the annual South West 7s Festival, we are working together once again this summer to deliver two rugby events dedicated for juniors. The three-day festival is running for the third time this year and has grown significantly in recent years. In 2017 the organisers decided to move the event to Cleve RFC. The Bristol-based club is offering all the facilities required for an action packed weekend including top-class pitches, a modern clubhouse and an easy to access location.
Starting off on Friday, the 'SW7s School’s Cup’ returns after last year’s successful launch. Eight local year 9 school teams compete for the cup in true sevens style. This is an excellent and unique opportunity for youngsters to really get a taste of the new Olympic sport at the highest level - refereed by the official refereeing team of the Dubai 7s. Entering a team is free of charge.
On the Sunday of the festival, we will run an all-day 7s competition for u15s and u16s teams. Advanced from the previous ‘SW7s Development Sessions’ featuring England Sevens star Dan Norton and former England Sevens coach Russell Earnshaw, this year we invite eight teams from each age group to enjoy a fabulous day of festival atmosphere.
The competition gives the youngsters a unique opportunity to play 7s in front of a large crowd, refereed by some of the best refs in the country. Entering a team is just £25 / team.
Our development coaches will come along to support the teams with advice on both occasions. As the sport grows from strength to strength in the UK and across the world, 7s has a massive future and we are making Bristol's mark in that future!
The events are part of a full weekend of 7s and sporting action at SW7s 2017. Featuring Men’s and Women’s competitions (Elite, Open and Social Cups), Dodgeball, live music, local food traders, festival fun and onsite camping! Families and supporters are welcome to join us for the festival.
We are currently seeking sponsorship for our junior activities. Please get in touch if you want to support a great cause.
