    Sean Horan, New Zealand women's silver medal-winning coach at Rio 2016, is set to lead another side at an Olympic Games after his new charges China used their recent HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series experience to overpower a largely youthful Hong Kong team and win the Asia Rugby qualification tournament on home soil in Guangzhou.

    Fiji became the ninth women's team to confirm their place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after reaching the final of the Oceania Rugby Sevens Championship, while Australia's men will join their women's team in Japan after also getting the job done at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.

    Australia women and South Africa men will be looking to retain their titles as teams begin their preparations in earnest for the upcoming HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series 2019

    The 2019 series has added incentive for the 11 core women’s teams and 15 core men’s teams who will battle it out to secure not only the coveted HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series titles, but also a place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games by finishing in the top four of the 2019 series.

    The women’s series increases to six rounds this year with the addition of new opening round, HSBC USA Women’s Sevens, kicking off in Glendale, Colorado on 20-21 October. The increase in playing opportunities is part of World Rugby’s commitment to provide more high-quality competition under the wider Women’s Plan 2017-25.

  • Session times announced for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games rugby sevens

    The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games organising committee has announced session times for the men’s and women’s rugby sevens competitions.

    As previously announced, the sevens will take place at the iconic Tokyo Stadium, a Rugby World Cup 2019 host venue, from 27 July-1 August.
